Our Goal:
Farm Sustainability- The ability to grow our own grains, ability to save
seed, natural fertilization, and ability to make our own feeds leads directly to
sustainability for our farm
In March 2011, Jones Family Farm was awarded with a $10,000 Grant from
RAFI-USA and the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.
Funds were awarded to purchase equipment to build and install an
"On Farm Feed Mill System" for better management of our livestock
and their nutrition.
What is useful about having an "On Farm Feed Mill System"?

We view an on farm feed mill will be useful in many ways.

Farm Sustainability- The ability to grow our own grains, ability to save seed, natural fertilization, and
ability to make our own feeds leads directly to sustainability for our farm

Low carbon footprint- This will greatly reduce the environmental impact, especially when considering the
amount of fuel spent on feeds and the number of bags that end up in landfills.

Convenience of feeding free range livestock- Having feed in bulk supply moving with a feed grinder to
the pastures to fill bulk feeders.

Customized nutritional needs-Free range livestock nutritional diet changes greatly with the weather,
seasons, forage, and soil types.

Ability to mix herbal supplements- Again, our market consumers (and our personal beliefs) do not allow
us to use antibiotics.  We believe in the use of "natural antibiotics" and natural immune boosters through herbal
supplements.
What is your goal for the project?  If you are successful, how will the project contribute
to keeping you or others sustainably employed on the farm?

Our goal for the project is to put sustainability in our feed program.  Having the ability to mix feed using safe
non-gmo grains with the addition of herbal supplements to maintain healthy animals is the ultimate goal.
High quality food for our customers requires the use of high quality feed.

With a successful project, this would greatly alter our feed expense leaving a higher income profitability
and a brighter future for our farm.
